Their thoughts into words then decode back into thoughts by the reader! Like an exclusive release only for yourself, one that has been filtered through your experiences, beliefs and so many conscious or unconscious bias's. Nice skill we have, to read then instantly create a mental image of it. How we picture different characters appearances, attitudes or how our inner voice thought their voices sounded like. To be successful it needs to be as good as or better than what our imagination has created as we read through the story.
